Foils and aluminium and aluminium alloy sheets in contact with food
Main requirements that the business user needs to know about
Article 93
Aluminium foils and sheets which, in the form of a wrapping or a lid i.e. formed packaging, are being used for packaging food and come into direct contact with the food, may be made from aluminium and aluminium alloys and must conform with the requirements of the European standards for these materials.
Foils and sheets from paragraph 1 of this article used for packaging acidic or alkaline foods or foods with high salt content must be laminated with special types of paper and/or coated with synthetic material which meet the requirements set out by article 32 through 71 of this Regulation or health-safe varnishes for used for sheet metal protection.
Unlaminated and unvarnished aluminium foils and sheets may not be used for producing packaging for short-term storage of ready-to-eat meals which are served in cafeterias, for wrapping food and in the household, if the food is acidic, moist or has high salt content.
For household foil, the manufacture must place a warning on limitations on the use of foil from paragraph 3 of this article on the original packaging.
Food for freezing and/or baking can be packaged in the packaging from paragraph 3 of this article provided that the packaging does not have an adverse effect on the composition of the food and organoleptic properties of the food.
Aluminium foils and sheets from paragraph 3 of this article may not be used to make packaging for ready-to-eat meals which are sterilized while in this packaging.
Article 94
Glues used in making laminated metal foils must be odourless, they must not moist the foils and they must conform with the requirements from articles 32 through 71 of this Regulation.
Glues from paragraph 1 of this article must not lose their adhesive properties when the foils are treated with hot water vapour, except for the foils which are not thermally processed.
Provision from paragraph 2 of this article does not apply no natural wax used in laminating metal foils intended for packing food which is not heat treated after packaging.
Article 95
In the production of metal tubes, aluminium foils and tapes and foils and tapes from other metals, substances which may adversely affect the food may not be used for coating.
